These staircases and doors are on a street which runs down the main tectonic fault line in Wellington, Tinakori Road. Weirdly, it is also one of the most expensive areas to live in the capital.
That looks like a crazy place to live with all those stairs. It must not be very seismically active as there doesn't look like there is a lot of displacement. Still, I would hate to be on those stairs during an event!
The reason we build houses with wood is because NZ is constantly "seismically active". I work in a two storey building just down the road and we regularly feel tremors. They are so deep that they are not dangerous, but we aren't known as the shaky islands for nothing:-) Have a good week.
That really is strange! I can't imagine paying more money to live on a fault line... but I do like the geometry of that staircase! And that red brick arch in the first photo is just wonderful! Now maybe they can pick it all up and relocate somewhere a little more stable :)
Wow, that door looks innocent as it hides the fact that one is about to ascend the Alps. But what price style, the climb may be foreboding but being in the pricier part of town, it seems that the owner likes it despite its altitude. At least the gate and brick arch is lovely!

you could save money on a gym membership if you had to climb up and down those stairs every day.
